Over $4b went into sports businesses and startups covering the gamut of verticals – wagering, gaming, NFT’s, athlete tracking, digital media, high performance and more. The amount of startups that converge several verticals is striking, say a fantasy sports startup having gaming, content or even wagering aspirations.
Funding into music and audio based startups topped the $1b mark with companies based around rights management, NFT’s, live and virtual events and music creation tools.
Over $1.4b went into health, fitness and wellness startups that I track for Bullpen which stick closer to sports, fitness, high performance as opposed to including mental health, nutrition and food and medical based health-based startups.
Gaming and esports focussed companies combined to raise over $2.8b in the first half of the year. This amount fascinated me as so much funding that poured into blockchain, NFT and web3 gaming and the gaming studios that build them was driven by VC firms like Animoca Brands, Griffin Gaming Partners and Hiro Capital.
