Research jointly conducted by Platinum Asset Management (Platinum) and GAIN LINE Analytics (GAIN LINE) have crowned NRL club Melbourne Storm as Australasia’s Best Sporting Team (ABST) for 2019.
The runners up were Christchurch-based Super Rugby club the Crusaders, and in third was the NSW Breakers cricket team.
The purpose of looking for ABST is to bring an analytical approach to how relationships within teams – better known as ‘cohesion’ – are important drivers of success or failure. GAIN LINE measures and drills down to understand what makes teams and teams within teams so successful through their unique set of Cohesion Analytics metrics which measures team cohesion in the long-term, medium-term and during the season.
Every game in every sport in Australasia that conducts an ongoing home/away or equivalent competition that included Australian and New Zealand teams were analysed subject to the competition criteria. The annual analysis, based on rolling five year outcomes (2015-2019), includes 16 competitions with six of the competitions being women’s. Overall, 8,210 individual matches were included in the dataset analysed.
Platinum and GAIN LINE previously partnered up to research what team cohesion as a key driver of success. In 2018 GAIN LINE conducted their statistical analysis of 14 leagues over 25 years which determined that the Crusaders were the strongest team over the 1994-2018 period.
Douglas Isles, investment specialist from Platinum commented, “I was introduced to Ben Darwin (GAIN LINE’s Director) and their theories on cohesion and teamwork around the 2015 Rugby World Cup. It resonated with work we had been doing around how best to present the strength and longevity of Platinum’s investment team. We became GAIN LINE’s first corporate client when they analysed Platinum as if we were a sporting team. Ben used group exercises to demonstrate cohesion in action to our staff, before we showcased his work to our clients; the feedback was outstanding.”
In recognition of their success the Melbourne Storm were presented with an opportunity to make a donation to a charitable cause where they made a donation to the Leukaemia Foundation.
